A Poem for Nana

Created by Alex 4 months ago
This is a tribute for our Nana and Great Granna to two, written by Georgia, Alex and Ollie with so much love.

When thinking about our Nana we struggled to know where to start,
How do we summarise the life of someone who had the biggest heart.
So many acts of kindness, so many days she made,
Each one of us here holds a memory that we know will never fade.

As we journey down memory lane we’ll start at Brickwood Road,
A special place to all of us given the constant love she showed.
We were all welcomed with open arms when we wanted a place to stay,
Waking to her croissants or bacon rolls, she knew how to start our day.

Taking us for a “quick” trip into Croydon was never a dull affair,
So many wanted to say hello, with memories or news to share.
We would laugh about it after and say it drives us insane,
But what we would do to be able to have one of those trips again.

She’d cook our favourite dinners with Viennetta to follow after,
With her wit and great sense of humour, the table was full of laughter.
Nana would treat us to a pound coin each time we walked out the door,
Oh how I would trade those pounds just to see our Nana once more.

So many beautiful memories that will stay with us forever,
But also the lessons learnt, now our lifelong endeavour.
Throughout each day, it’s Nana’s values we will choose,
As the world will be a better place if we all walk in her shoes.

If anyone needed help or a friend, there Nana would be,
Taking shopping to Mrs Phillips down the road or sharing a cup of tea.
Always on hand for her neighbours, checking they were alright,
A guardian angel for anyone in need, morning, noon or night.

We learnt how to knit under Nana’s patience and care,
We were curious to know why she was always knitting a square,
She explained it would make a blanket sent to a child in need,
You would never know if you didn’t ask, just another selfless deed.

Nothing got past Nana, she remembered more than most,
You would always get a phone call followed by something in the post.
No matter the occasion, Nana would always send a card,
Even for events or achievements others may disregard.

If we hold onto the memories and lessons from our Nana at number five,
We can continue spreading that kindness and keeping her memory alive.
We know God needed his angel and that’s why she couldn’t stay,
But as we recall these treasured times we know she’s never far away.

Anyway we’ll stop now Nana, we know you never wanted a fuss,
We just wanted to let you know how much you mean to us.
So in your words Nana it’s “see you later love”, not goodbye,
You certainly earned your wings, and now is your time to fly.
